I am very honoured to be part of the largest Festival of contempary performing arts in the world.
The 2023 edition of the Lake Como Design Festival took place from 16 to 24 September in the city of Como, developing through a series of exhibitions, meetings, installations and widespread events. Hosted by historic, unknown or forgotten places in the city and in the surrounding area, Lake Como Design Festival aims, like every year, to make the public discover the artistic and architectural heritage of its territory through a new cultural proposal.
At the Theatre in the stunning location of Villa Olmo, a refined staging by the Italian company Baxter has invited the public to relax and admire the extraordinary dance of starlings, documented by director Jan van IJken in The Art of Flying.

Through the looking glass is an exhibition by EST Art Foundation, Leiden, NL in the dark hours from December 27 2021 to February 27 2022, while still following COVID restrictions. Works shine every day from dusk to 11pm. This exhibition is for everyone to be seen while walking or cycling in Singelpark Leiden, Through the looking glass.

Through the looking glass is about wonder and amazement, about awareness, research and seeing through. From outside to inside and, about light and darkness. The EST 2022 Through the Looking glass schedule will celebrate the capacity for researching the exquisite complexity of natural phenomena.

The short version of The art of flying will be screened at the TED conference in Vancouver, Canada.
Short film about “murmurations”: the mysterious flights of the Common Starling. It is still unknown how the thousands of birds are able to fly in such dense swarms without colliding. Every night the starlings gather at dusk to perform their stunning air show.
Because of the relatively warm winter of 2014/2015, the starlings stayed in the Netherlands instead of migrating southwards. This gave filmmaker Jan van IJken the opportunity to film one of the most spectacular and amazing natural phenomena on earth.

The film has been screened at more than 50 international film festivals, art galleries, museums, etc. It was awarded “Best art film” at Pärnu Int. Documentary Film Festival, Estonia. The short 2 min version of the film was published online by National Geographic’s Short Film Showcase and was selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick.

The art of flying (short 2 min version) has been selected for VIMEO STAFF PICKS!
In Reggio Emilia, part of the film The art of flying was projected full screen during the final act of the opera “Haye: Le parole la notte”.
The opera was directed by Alina Marazzi.
Jan van IJken is a filmmaker and photographer from the Netherlands, working at the interface of art and science.
His work is about the secrets of nature, microscopy, embryology and human-animal relationships.
The art of flying will be exhibited for a month from 15th January 2017 in Natlab, Eindhoven, the Netherlands

One of the biggest screens in Berlin, a handful of the best musicians, and a few of the most exciting short films of the year: That’s the recipe for SOUND & VISION at Interfilm International Short Film Festival, Berlin, Germany. As in the previous five years, on this evening more than 20 musicians board the Volksbühne and accompany the evening’s films with original soundtracks especially composed for this event. An evening filled with audiovisual superlatives.
The art of flying opened this very special evening with live music of Smalltape Syndrome (piano + guitar).
Wonderful opening last weekend of Biennnale De l’image Possible in Liège, Belgium. The art of flying will be playing there in a loop until 16th October at the entrance of the Manège Fonck (main venue) of the biennale. The art of flying has won the award for Best Art Film at Pärnu international documentary film festival, Estonia
The prize was awarded at a special ceremony, broadcasted live on national Estonian TV.
